April is Alcohol Awareness Month

Alcohol Awareness Month is a public health program organized by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence as a way of increasing outreach and education regarding the dangers of alcoholism and issues related to alcohol. The program was started in April 1987 with the intention of targeting college-aged students who might be drinking too much as part of their newfound freedom. It has since become a national movement to draw more attention to the causes and effects of alcoholism as well as how to help families and communities deal with drinking problems.

Facts:

  • According to the 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 16.6 million young adults ages 18 to 25 (49.7% in this age group) reported that they drank alcohol in the past month.
  • According to the 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 1.4 million people ages 12 and older who had alcohol use disorder (AUD) in the past year (4.6% of people with past-year AUD in this age group) received any alcohol use treatment in the past year.
  • It is estimated that more than 140,000 people (approximately 97,000 men and 43,000 women) die from alcohol-related causes annually, making alcohol the fourth-leading preventable cause of death in the United States behind tobacco, poor diet and physical inactivity, and illegal drugs.
  • In 2010, alcohol misuse cost the United States $249 billion.
