Incident Involving Student on Brighton Campus

On Tuesday, February 28, at approximately 12:25 p.m., a call was received indicating an MCC student was in possession of a firearm on the Brighton Campus. Once MCC Public Safety was informed of the call, they immediately followed protocol and worked to identify the student and their location. They proceeded to the student’s location. Upon arriving at the classroom, the student was escorted from the room and was found to be in possession of a firearm, in violation of MCC policy and New York State Penal Law. At no time was the student displaying the firearm or acting in a threatening manner. The student was taken into custody by Public Safety and charged by Brighton police.

The possession or use of any dangerous or deadly weapon at MCC or at any College-sponsored function, without official authorization, is prohibited. A “dangerous or deadly weapon or instrument” includes but is not limited to any firearm, shotgun, rifle, pistol, air rifle, or BB gun. This prohibition includes the possession of any replica or “fake” copy of a weapon, which can seem real to a reasonable person.

Keeping students and employees safe is MCC’s highest priority. MCC Public Safety Department remains proactive in ensuring an effective, swift response to any incident. We ask the MCC community to immediately contact Public Safety at (585) 292-2911 if they suspect anything out of the ordinary.
