National Bike To School Day Is Almost Upon Us

I hope you are planning on participating in National Bike To School Day on May third. That is next Wednesday! Put it on your calendar right now. You are more likely to do it if you schedule it.

If you park and ride and only ride halfway to MCC, you will still cut your gasoline consumption in half. You will also get a quick workout with some much-needed fresh air. Why wouldn't you ride to school on May third?

Due to MCC’s Brighton Campus location, you can safely avoid vehicular traffic by utilizing the canal path, the Lehigh Valley Trail, and the Genesee River Trail. You can safely ride virtually traffic free on the canal path right to MCC. The downtown campus is not quite as conveniently located on the canal, but the Genesee River Trail will get you mighty close to campus.

Remember this, it is not so much your level of fitness, but rather, your level of exertion that determines whether or not you need a shower when you get to MCC. It depends on how hard you work while you're riding your bike. Are you a sweater? If so, ride to building 10 and use the shower facilities in the locker room. If you're not a sweater, and you're confident in your friends, don't bother with the shower. Your friends and colleagues will let you know if you made the wrong determination.

It is only 4.25 miles from RIT to MCC via the Lehigh Valley Trail and Crittenden Road. I did not experience much traffic on Crittenden, but I prefer the extra mile or two to use the canal path and avoid all traffic.

Take a short ride tomorrow. Ask yourself, “How hard was that?” If you thought it was easy, ride a little farther on the next day. Keep increasing your distance each day and hopefully, by May 3rd, you will be riding all the way from your home to MCC and back.
