Suzanne Jacobs McKim, Professor Emerita of Nursing

Members of the MCC family mourn the loss of Professor Emerita of Nursing Suzanne Jacobs McKim. Professor Emerita McKim passed away on March 28.

According to her obituary, Professor Emerita McKim “is survived by Arlin, her loving husband of 52 years, her daughters Amanda and Katie McKim, her brothers Bob Jacobs and Tom (Vilis) Jacobs, her sister, Barbara (Stewart) Agor, her niece Christy Agor (Mike) and her great-nephews Max and Charlie Peters. She is predeceased by her parents and her son, Matthew McKim.”

An inspiring lifelong learner and educator, Professor Emerita McKim earned her associate in applied science degree in nursing from MCC, followed by earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from the University of Rochester. She also studied American Sign Language and took a variety of adult education classes. She loved children and specialized in pediatric nursing.

MCC was fortunate when Professor Emerita McKim began teaching our nursing students as an instructor in 1969. Her MCC career spanned more than 30 years—advising and mentoring students, serving as Sigma Iota Chi service sorority faculty advisor, and supporting Department of Nursing efforts such as clinical evaluations and program development. Her leadership and service touched many areas of the College, from Admissions and Library initiatives through special events. A dedicated Faculty Senate member and officer, she served on the Faculty Senate’s Curriculum Committee and Special Committee on Administrative Affairs (SCAA). Her dedication and service was recognized when she received the Dr. Wesley T. Hanson Award for Excellence in Teaching in the presence of her colleagues. Professor Emerita McKim retired from MCC in 2000. The MCC Board of Trustees honored her with the title of professor emerita of nursing shortly thereafter.

Professor Emerita McKim’s dedication to her family, students and colleagues will long be remembered. Contributions in her memory can be made to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in support of brain cancer research.
