CSTEP Students Participate in Brookhaven National Labs College Mini-Semester

Two students in the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) spent a week at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in Upton, NY.   The students, Shane Michtavy (Engineering) and Pamineo Richards (Engineering) participated in a lab-related research project.
They attended lectures on major research projects such as the  National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II)  and  The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope  (LSST).   Shane and Pamineo had the opportunity to tour The Center for Functional Nanomaterials with focuses on fuel cell chemistries and architectures and photovoltaic (solar cell) components.

Reflecting on the week at BNL, Pamineo stated that the College mini-session “allowed me to be part of something truly unimaginable. You can read all the history, articles, research papers you want, but nothing compares to what I was exposed to this past week.”  Both Shane and Pamineo have applied to the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship at BNL.

The Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) at MCC is an academic enrichment program that focuses on recruitment and retention from underrepresented individuals in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering Math (STEM), the licensed and health professions.  A component of CSTEP is student placement in research experiences.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow.
