President's Wednesday Message

Last week, I wrote about what I have been hearing about MCC as I have met with folks outside and inside the college, and I had planned to write this week about how we recruit the future of MCC.  But, after putting the weekly message to bed last Tuesday night, I had a series of meetings that made me rethink the topic.  As an unreformed literature student and teacher, I have to admit that I see themes and patterns everywhere, and at the end of last week, it hit me that all my meetings had centered on the incredibly positive impact MCC has made or could make in the community.

So, I’m switching topics this week to one that is - perhaps - more in keeping with the upcoming holiday:  appreciation.  Sometimes, we barely even have time to look up from our work to see the big picture: the remarkable way in which MCC changes lives.  But, as we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I encourage you to pause for just a moment to reflect on how each of your actions - no matter how hurried or seemingly small - are adding up to real change for our students and our community.  As you reflect, please know that your commitment is appreciated in and out of the college.  Last week, I saw that appreciation firsthand in places as diverse as a city charter school, a celebratory banquet, and a town park lodge.  I heard that appreciation expressed by a single mother looking for assistance in navigating her entry into MCC, a hall of fame inductee who took his last MCC class 40 years ago, and a university president who never took a single MCC class.

And, today, I want you to hear this appreciation from me.  Thank you for all that you do each day, thank you for being so welcoming to me and my family, and thank you for believing in all that MCC can do today and tomorrow.

Remember, you can be part of the conversation at my
President's Wednesday Message blog. What are you thankful for at MCC?  I’d love to find out.

Enjoy the holiday!

And, next week . . . recruiting the future (this time I mean it!).
