Trustee G. Jean Howard Speaks to AAWCC Members

MCC Trustee G. Jean Howard, executive director, Wilson Commencement Park, was the guest speaker at the American Association for Women in Community College (AAWCC) and National Institute for Leadership Development’s (NILD) holiday event on Wednesday, December 8 in Reflections.

This year AAWCC/NILD members enjoyed a “holiday tea” with their most “treasured” teacups, conversation and a presentation on Jean Howard’s leadership experiences.

Jean Howard spoke of her experiences as a young girl growing up in North Carolina.  She discussed “labeling” and how people are judged based on gender, ethnic backgrounds, educational backgrounds, even in what part of the country you were raised. She emphasized that it is how you overcome your labels that is significant.

To become an accomplished leader, Jean Howard believes giving back to your community is most important. Being able to develop, create and support programs that enable the less fortunate is vital for communities to thrive. Taking personal responsibility to help someone “enrich” their life is the attribute of a “makes a difference” type of leader. Jean urged everyone to become involved in their community – whether it be through volunteering or donations – but get involved.

The AAWCC Program Committee extends a warm “thank you” to Jean Howard for sharing her leadership experiences and beliefs with us. Thanks are also extended to Dr. Susan Salvador, vice president, Student Services, and Janet Glocker, vice president, Academic Services, for their continued support as well as all AAWCC members who are “vital” to this organization.

Happy holidays to everyone!
