Motor Vehicle Thefts on Campus

Monroe Community College Timely Warning: Motor Vehicle Thefts

The Monroe Community College Public Safety Department wants to inform the community of the following two incidents that occurred on campus this week:

  • On Monday, April 15, 2024, a Hyundai was stolen out of Lot E, near the Childcare Center at approximately 5:50 pm.
  • On Tuesday, April 16, 2024, a 2020 Kia Sportage was stolen out of Lot E at approximately 10:30 pm.

In both cases, the suspects used a tool to remove the door lock to access the interior of the vehicles to start the cars.  The suspects can access the car and depart in less than three minutes.

As we saw over the summer of 2023, Kias and Hyundais were being stolen at a very high rate across Monroe County.  The trend has dissipated, however, these two incidents should not be ignored.

What can you do?

  • If you have a Kia or Hyundai, you can talk to your local Kia or Hyundai dealer to have technology updated to assist in preventing vehicle theft.
  • MCC Public Safety also has a limited supply of free vehicle steering wheel locks that may assist in deterring vehicle theft.  You can contact MCC Public Safety at (585) 292-2911 to obtain a lock.

MCC Public Safety will be increasing patrols and taking other steps to help curb this trend.

Any questions, please contact MCC Public Safety at (585) 292-2911.

Thank you for your diligence in keeping yourselves and our college community safe.
