Attendance is Due October 1st

This is just a quick reminder that attendance should be submitted in Banner self service by Wednesday, October 1st.  All courses with a census date of 9-30-08 or earlier are included in this collection deadline.

I suspect census doesn't have the same meaning for teaching faculty as it might to administrative staff.  Why is this day so magical?  Because we affectionately refer to it as our "pay day."  (OK, Financial Aid and Registration refer to it that way!)

Students who attend classes on or after census qualify to receive their aid based on their attendance

The college earns state dollars for students in attendance on or beyond census.

Every course has its own census date based on the start/end dates of the class.  Obviously, most of our classes meet for the entire session --- so the most common census date is 9-22 for the fall 08 term.  So, if you are teaching a course that starts later in the term (and therefore has a later census date), your attendance will be due later.  A second attendance collection that picks up all courses with a census date greater than 9-30 will have an attendance collection deadline of 11-19.  Letters, e-mails and reminders will follow.

The key to entering your attendance correctly is:
1.    Enter the data after your census date.  Preferably, wait until the class following census to see if the student comes back so he/she can be marked present or attending.

2.  If you know a student is out of class on the census date because of an illness, but believe he/she is coming back to class --- mark the student as attending.  Yes, this is a guess on your part.  But it is an educated guess and probably a good one.

3.  You can't change your attendance after it has been submitted.  So, if you guess wrong, just send me an e-mail and I'll adjust the attendance record.  No big deal.

4.  How do you know your attendance was sent correctly?  Because we will notify you the next business day that your attendance was received.  If you do not get the e-mail, then you should check Banner to see if your attendance is there.  We always recommend you enter your attendance and then go back to double check it was saved correctly.  (Proof your work after hitting submit)

5.  We run an audit on each student marked absent or no longer attending before census and determine if they qualify to be dropped from the class based on their financial record.  Many students will be dropped.  However, there will be students who never attended or stopped attending who will remain on your class roster.  These students did not qualify for the drop and you will be required to give them a grade.  You can withdraw them or you can fail them.  Your choice.

And as always, call us if you need help.  We are here every day from 8:00 to 4:45.  We do answer our telephones (292-2300, x0) and we love e-mail (<<mailto:eripton@monroecc.edu>>).  If you have suggestions on how we can make this process clearer or easier, feel free to share that with us also.
