STEP Students Participate in the Pre-Medical Conference

“Making Your Goal A Reality” was the theme at the Pre-Medical Conference held at the University of Rochester Medical Center.  STEP High School Seniors attended this conference and were inspired and motivated to continue their pursuits of entering medical school.  These students had the opportunity to participate in laboratory activities, attend workshops and even have lunch with physicians.

Facilitated by the Student National Medical Association, Inc. (SNMA), the Premedical Conference is designed to bring awareness to the career opportunities in the medical fields.  The STEP students gained valuable insight on how to begin preparing now for their future medical career.  The students were able to dialogue with current medical students and gain various perspectives of the pathways to, and experiences in, medical school.

In one of the laboratories, students engaged in surgical suturing using pig skin.  They were able to perform simple interrupted stitches and successfully bind the sutures with surgical knots.  After performing this activity, the STEP students were excited and felt very accomplished.  Truly, this Pre-medical conference made a positive impact on the STEP students.

The purpose of the Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) is to prepare secondary school students, who are either economically disadvantaged or minorities historically underrepresented, enter postsecondary degree programs in STEM, health or licensed professions. STEP has been at MCC for about nineteen (19) years.
