Monitoring your billing statements and credit reports regularly is an important part of controlling identity and cyber-theft. What are some common warning signs for identity theft?
- Credit card charges that you don't recognize
- Bills that arrive on unusual days
- Denials of credit for no apparent reason
- Calls or letters about things you didn't buy
- New credit cards or statements for accounts that you didn't open
- Information on your credit reports you don't recognize, such as accounts or addresses
You're entitled to one free copy of your credit report every 12 months from each of the three nationwide credit reporting companies (TransUnion, Equifax and Experian). You can access them online from AnnualCreditReport.com, the only authorized website for free credit reports, or call 1-877-322-8228. You will need to provide your name, address, social security number, and date of birth to verify your identity. These free annual credit reports do not include credit scores.
