Advising Pre-Requisite Changes for the English Department

As the rush of registration has begun, we would like to advise the college community of the significant changes which have happened in placement over the last few months that will dramatically impact student advisement and registration. Perhaps the most significant change is that only students who score 100 or higher on reading and 82 or higher on sentence-level skills can register for English 101 without some level of required or recommended remediation.  See below for changes now activated in Banner in regard to TRS and ENG courses.

Pre-requisites to get into ENG 101

-- TRS 101 and TRS 103 have been deactivated and streamlined into two new courses: TRS 100 and TRS 200.   All students who score below 71 on reading will be placed into either TRS 100 or TRS 200.

-- TRS 100 is now a hard pre-requisite for TRS 200. Students who score below 58 on reading must pass it with a C or better before enrolling in TRS 200.

-- TRS 200 is now a hard pre-requisite for English 101.  Students who score below 71 on reading must pass it with a C or better before enrolling in Eng 101.

--   TRS 105 is a hard pre-requisite for students scoring 71 or higher on reading, but lower than 82 for sentence skills.

-- ESL 201 is now a hard pre-requisite for English 101 for students who place into ESL courses.  Students must pass ESL 201 with a C or better before enrolling in Eng 101.

-- Advisors are now asked not to revise students’ placements.  Students wishing to have their placement into TRS 100 be revised up to TRS 200 should be directed to contact Matthew Fox at <"mailto:mfox@monroecc.edu">.  Students wishing to contest their placements to enroll in English 101 should be directed to contact Elizabeth Johnston, English 101 Course Coordinator at<"mailto:ejohnston@monroecc.edu"> or Cathryn Smith, English/Philosophy Department Chair at <"mailto:csmith2@monroecc.edu">.  We will be happy to meet with these students to discuss their placements.

Note: for Fall 2013, students can still technically register for 100 level English courses (other than English 101) without these pre-requisites.  However, the English department is waiting on final approval (which we expect in the next week or so) for a hard pre-requisite of TRS 100 and/or TRS 200 before students register for ENG 102, 105, 106, 108, or 113.  We ask that in the meantime, you discourage students who place into TRS 100, TRS 200, or TRS 105 from enrolling in these courses.

Reading Co-requisites

·         REA 100 (Reading in the Disciplines), a 3 credit gen ed elective, is strongly recommended for students scoring between 71 and 80.9 for reading. It can be taken either as a co-requisite with TRS 105 or ENG 101.

·         Rea 101 (Critical Reading), which now offers 3 MCC HMN credits, is strongly recommended for students scoring between 81 and 99.9 on reading.  It can be taken either as a co-requisite with TRS 105 or ENG 101.

Pre-requisites for 200 Level English Courses

·         English 101 is now a hard pre-requisite for all 200 level English courses. Students must pass English 101 with a C or better before enrolling in 200 level English courses.

Thank you for your help as we navigate this important transition.  As always, we are available for questions.
