The 5 Days of Brightspace Gradebook: Day 3

Day 3: Adjust Your Category Weights

Welcome to Day 3 of the 5 days of Brightspace gradebook! This week we will run a series of simple tasks that you can do to check your gradebook to make sure it is functioning properly.  If you haven't done some of the steps that we will share this week, it may be a good idea to check your courses now!

The third tip is to adjust your category weights. Edit each category with the correct numerical weight. By default, when the setup wizard is triggered in a weighted gradebook, the category weights are set to "0.01" if you have transferred your gradebook from Blackboard. This is how you can quickly tell if your categories are not set up with the correct weights.  To check this, go to the Grades on the navbar and then click the Manage Grades tab. From here, locate each category (the row will be slightly shaded) and then use the chevron to the right of the title and click edit. Enter your weight and select the option to distribute evenly across all of the items (this is recommended). If you are dropping the lowest item in a category, you can also drop the lowest score. In theory, you should end up with no error messages in your gradebook and your grade should total 100% in the calculated final grade. The following video will give you a quick tour of updating categories.

If you need additional help, reach out to the Virtual Campus Team during drop-in hours over zoom. See our support hours and zoom link. If you prefer to come in person, we will have one on-campus drop-in day on 12/19 from 9am-noon and 1-4pm in the Virtual Campus Training Room (3-122) in lieu of zoom hours

Stay tuned for Day 4 tips!
