TCC: Honoring AHPS Retiree James Norman

I have long said that our adjunct faculty are some of our most underappreciated employees at the College. I appreciate any opportunity to highlight the amazing dedication and commitment our adjuncts have to our students and the College.

I would like to take this time to thank one of our adjuncts in the Anthropology/History/Political Science/Sociology (AHPS) department as he retires from almost 24 years of service at MCC. James Norman will be missed, and we appreciate all he has done in service to our students.

James began adjunct teaching in sociology in 1999. Until 2018, James was the President and CEO of Action for a Better Community (ABC) in Rochester, a multi-faceted “community action agency,” that promotes self-sufficiency for low-income individuals and families in Monroe and Ontario Counties. His work in the community was a testament to the importance of sociology in our lives. Organizations like ABC are critical examples of applied sociology. Community organizations connect theory to social justice action. For years, James was instrumental in making real world connections to understanding and communicating how vital our work in sociology can be for our community members.

It is in this spirit, that the AHPS department thanks James for his commitment and transformative work here at MCC and beyond. Congratulations, James as you continue to do the community’s work. We thank you for your service and recognize your talents, wisdom and life experience. You will indeed be missed.
