Advising Hot Tip: SUNY General Education Requirements
When using Degree Works to advise students, you will notice a section titled SUNY General Education Requirements. This section shows SUNY General Education courses completed, as well as currently registered courses. This breakdown of SUNY General Education (SUNY-GER) courses is informational only. It is a way for students and advisors to see which courses will count toward the 30 credits in at least seven of the ten SUNY-GER categories.
Students do not need to complete certain courses in this section. A common trip up for an advisor happens when a student takes BIO 133 Human Biology without the lab (BIO 132). The General Education section will show a red box (still needed) for BIO 132. This is informational only and alerts the student and advisor that BIO 132 needs to be completed for BIO 133 to count as a SUNY General Education course. Students and advisors should check the degree program requirements in the four-semester sequence to see if a SUNY Natural Science is required.
