Proposed Bylaw Changes

The following proposed bylaws were presented to the Faculty Senate on March 16, 2023.

Proposed Bylaws

B) Representation. Senate membership shall be determined in the following way:

  1. Academic departments with 5 to 13 voting members shall elect or appoint one senator; with 14 to 22 voting members shall elect or appoint two senators; with 23 or more voting members shall elect three senators.
  2. Professional staff departments/offices with 5 to 13 voting members shall elect or appoint one senator; with 14 to 22 voting members shall elect or appoint two senators; with 23 or more voting members shall elect or appoint three senators.
  3. Academic departments or professional staff departments/offices with fewer than 5 voting members shall be combined together into divisional areas that best represent the College's current management structure.
  4. Divisional areas with 13 or fewer voting members shall elect one senator; with 14 to 22 voting members shall elect two senators; with 23 or more voting members shall elect three senators.

Rationale for the proposed bylaws changes:

  • Due to the decline in the number of faculty and staff, some academic departments and offices fell below the minimum number of constituents (6) needed for a Senator representation from their department/office. Decreasing the numbers would allow the smaller departments/offices to elect a Senator from their respective department/office.
  • Offices that have less than the minimum requirement of constituents needed for a Senator representation were merged, however, some offices do not naturally "fit" with each other, hindering the opportunities to fully discuss Faculty Senate items.  This proposal would allow for creating smaller groups that naturally work together or are in close proximity to create opportunities for greater discussion and feedback from constituents.
  • With the current structure, Faculty Senate has 47 Senators.  With the proposed structure, Faculty Senate would have 52 Senators.

As required by the Bylaws, the Senators approved forwarding the motion to the voting members of the Faculty Senate.  All voting members have the opportunity to vote on this matter.

Voting will occur the week of March 27th to March 31st, under the auspices of Institutional Research (IR). An email with the voting instructions will be sent by IR to all voting members. It will be a digital vote.

Two zoom forums will be held to discuss the proposed bylaws changes. No registration is needed. Just log in.
