Brightspace Gradebook Support Reminders
The Virtual Campus is here to support you as you are finalizing your grades for the semester in Brightspace. As you enter grades for end of the year assignments, projects, and tests, it is a good idea to check to make sure that overall grades are reasonable and reported accurately. If you need a refresher on the basics of the Brightspace gradebook, see About Grades in Brightspace.
Gradebook Tips:
- Dig out your Course Information Sheet and make sure your gradebook is totaling points or weighting grades according to your grade distribution. Then compare that to your gradebook setup.
- Within the Grade Center, from the Grades page, check your Manage Grades area that contains a list of the organization of your gradebook. You can reorganize, edit, delete, bulk edit, and adjust the structure of your gradebook from here. See Manage Grades for more details.
- In Brightspace, keep an eye out for error messages that can commonly happen when grade items are not assigned to categories. Brightspace will display an alert that you are over 100%. This frequently happens when you add a new assignment and you don’t categorize it. See Error Messages in the Gradebook.
- Within the Grades area, take advantage of the “Preview” option next to each student’s name in the gradebook. You can look at what the student sees and make sure it matches what you expect. See How to Preview Student View of Grades.
- If you are not seeing what you expect, double-check the Setup Wizard. You can run the seven-step process or review your settings to make sure you are using the correct grading system, releasing grades as expected, using the appropriate grade calculation method (i.e. drop ungraded vs. treat ungraded items as zero), and showing the preferred scheme and managing views as expected. If you need a refresher on the Setup Wizard, see Set up your grade book.
- Customize your gradebook view using the settings gear within the Grades area. See Grade Tool Settings for more details.
- If you would like to download a copy of your gradebook in Excel format, you have the option to export it. This can be helpful for spot-checking grades and doing your own manipulation if needed. See How to Download a Copy of Your Gradebook (Video).
- We do not have a connection with Brightspace to Banner to report final grades, so you will do that final grade input manually through Banner. Please look out for further communications from Records and Registration on this process.
We are here to help with your Brightspace gradebook, so in addition to our Zoom drop-in hour schedule, we have added specific appointment days to help assist with Brightspace gradebook calculations. You will have the option to book an on-campus or Zoom appointment in 30-minute intervals.
