TCC Gratitude Series, day 9: Faculty Spotlight on Suzanne Long and Jennifer Hill

We hope you have been enjoying reading these student-written kudos as much as we have. For the last two days of our gratitude series, we will be spotlighting a few faculty who received an avalanche of nominations from their students. Jennifer and Suzanne, thanks for inspiring those around you, but especially your students!

Receiving 6 nominations: Suzanne Long, Biology

  • Professor Long is interested in her subject which helps get the students interested as well. She takes time out of class to help and make sure students are prepared.
  • Professor Long truly wants her students to excel in her class. Her teaching is engaging and expertly communicated. She is organized and sets clear and achievable goals and standards. She provides multiple venues for additional support, including zoom sessions and in-person office hours. I am very grateful to have had her as an instructor for microbiology.
  • I am a former student who was nervous about returning to the college, but professor Long has made it possible and interesting in Microbiology class. She is professional and has great knowledge of Microbiology. Dr. Long cares about her student's success and shares her personal stories to explain topics better. She makes it possible for her student to come to the zoom meeting before each exam which was very helpful for me. She has such an amazing personality and sense of humor.
  • Professor Long, you are an amazing, wonderful, patient, understanding, caring, and intelligent instructor. You always want us to learn, and it isn't just a job for you. You always explain things over and over until we understand. On the last day of the bio 202 class, I hope I can take a photo with you. Love you so much.
  • Professor Long goes above and beyond to make microbiology, which is a pretty difficult course, as simple and manageable as possible. She also communicates with the class very well regarding her expectations for assignments and I feel totally comfortable reaching out to her for help if needed. Her Zoom sessions that she hosts before exams are also extremely helpful.
  • Professor Long is the smartest, most enthusiastic, and most engaging professor I have had. She's also just a wonderful human. She goes above and beyond for her students. I had Covid-19 in the middle of the semester, and she set up an online version of the exam for me. And then she made sure to check in on me when I came back to class. Professor Long has made me consider specializing in infectious diseases when I become a nurse. I love learning from her.

Receiving 6 nominations: Jennifer Hill, Biology

  • Dr. Hill has been the most understanding professor I’ve encountered. Her humor keeps the lecture flowing smoothly and her teaching style fits greatly with many students. No matter how stupid of a question, she always answered sincerely and never failed to encourage all of her students and let them know it is possible to succeed with the right amount of work and determination.
  • Thanks for being a bright light of encouragement and example of transparency and authenticity. You have shown me through truth, laughter, education, and determination. Life dreams are still worth accomplishing!
  • Dr. Hill goes above and beyond to help her students succeed in a tough class. She is always available to answer any questions during her office hours and is understanding and accommodating to her students.
  • Professor Hill takes the time to make sure all of us “get it.” If we’re having trouble she has no problem taking time outside of class to answer any questions we may have. I’m a disabled student and I appreciate that she works with me in any capacity she can. She’s setting me up for success. If I’m willing to work toward it, she’s more than willing to go to extra mile to push me to get there and help along the way.
  • Dr. Hill is in my opinion the epitome of what a college professor should be: engaging, forthright, respectful, and kind. She is very clearly a lover of both science and education. Her honesty as to what she does and doesn't know about the subject is refreshing and helps to ensure honesty and hard work from her students.
  • Professor Hill is an awesome professor, I took her again this semester because I failed biology last semester, and she answers all my questions and my concerns. She explains the material so well. I just want to thank you so much for helping me and not judging me for taking the class with you again.
