Update from MCC’s Sustainability Steering Committee

After almost a year’s effort, the Sustainability Steering Committee (SSC) is proud to share MCC’s newly adopted 2013-2015 Sustainability Operational Plan.  The plan follows the college’s operational plan template and demonstrates close relationships to our current Strategic Plan.

As the SSC begins implementation of the plan, it will be focusing on integrating the “Living Laboratory” concept -- the idea of using the campus itself as a teaching tool to promote sustainability awareness.  In essence, the Living Laboratory concept seeks to embrace campus practices, buildings and grounds, regional eco-systems, and the local community as assets for learning and experimentation in the advancement of sustainability.

As a signatory of the President’s Climate Commitment, MCC is working towards the pursuit of climate neutrality.  Like all organizations, colleges and universities need to eliminate their direct contributions to unsustainable practices. More importantly, students must experience sustainable living firsthand and be involved in helping their schools become powerful role models of sustainable practices for the rest of society.

Our entrepreneurial partnerships with business, agricultural, educational, government, and community partners underscore MCC’s commitment to creating a learning environment that extends far beyond the borders of our campuses to fulfill our mission in the context of a 21st century learning environment.  By experiencing firsthand the challenges, solutions and opportunities associated with creating a sustainable campus, tomorrow’s graduates will be well prepared to help future employers do the same, providing the basis for an environment that will be sustainable for a long time into the future.
