Spring Semester Wellness Information

SUNY institutions, including MCC, will not have spring breaks this semester. In preparation for a 15 weeks straight semester, MCC faculty and staff held a wellness roundtable to discuss the challenges such a schedule poses. The group offered recommendations to proactively ensure a healthy semester for students, faculty, and staff. Here are some of the ideas that were presented:

  • Workshops on wellness topics. various departments will be hosting presentations throughout the semester. The first one is on relaxation:
  • Zoom Sessions
    • Play relaxing music before a presentation
    • Use polling features to check in on class health and well-being
    • Bring in guest speakers to cover wellness topics: Student Services staff will glady assist
    • Add appropriate humor to relieve stress
    • End sessions early to allow for down time
    • Remind students of available campus services
    • Encourage attendance at virtual wellness events
  • Establish a daily routine that includes exercise and some form of mindful relaxation for yourself
  • Check in often with colleagues and students
  • Involve students in solutions
  • Complete a BIR or contact campus support sources when concerned about a student

The lack of a break adds to the challenges of this pandemic period, but through our collective efforts we can make a positive difference for the MCC community. The Wellness Council, TCC, Counseling Center, Student Rights and Responsibilities, Student Life and Leadership, Athletics, Health Services, Residence Life, and several other departments will be collaborating throughout the semester to provide programming and information via the Trib to ensure that this spring is a healthy and productive semester. Thanks to all.
