English and Philosophy Department Student Writing Contest Winners

On behalf of the Student Writing Awards Committee:

We are pleased to announce the winners of the 54th Annual English/Philosophy Department Writing Contest.

Callan Award - Research:

  • 1st Place "The Increased Risk of Suicide for Transnational Adoptees: An Intersectional Study of Cultural Identities, Race, and Ethnicity" by Elisabeth Small
  • 2nd “Grades and the Greater Questions of U.S. Education Reform: Why the Public Education System’s Biggest Flaws are so Pervasive” by Anya Bryant

Rice Award - Creative Non-fiction:

  • 1st Place “Stains” by Morreen Walsh
  • 2nd Place “Red Light, Green Light” by Katherine Reilly

Cooney Award - Literary:

  • 1st Place “Kiều and Kim: Trauma, Love, and Adapting to Change” by Raina Lockwood
  • 2nd Place “Litany at the Tomb of Frederick Douglass: The Possibility of the Seemingly Impossible” by Noelle Becker

Cloos-Susskind - Poetry:

  • 1st Place “Undo” by Elisabeth Small
  • 2nd Place “Rehash” by Maya Kucio

Langlois - Short Fiction:

  • 1st Place “Scion” by Niamh Kenney
  • 2nd Place “Black Swans” by Georgia Brooks

The winners will be honored at an awards ceremony held in the Forum on the Brighton campus, Thursday, May 8th, at 4:00 PM.
