Reminder: Who Are We??  Faculty Senate Professional Development Event on Weds., June 13

Dear Colleagues,

This announcement provides more information for the June 13th  “Who Are We ? event sponsored by Faculty Senate and the Human Resources Department. See the wonderful attachment designed by our own Athesia Benjamin for times and details. The location is Monroe A & B.

This is a reminder to send your RSVP to
bdavies@monroecc.edu (292-2106) so we have a fairly accurate count for coffee and for lunch

This whole event is focused on culture – the fabric that holds us together and to some great extent determines who we are. The day will begin with coffee and registration at 9:30, followed by a presentation by Dr. Dennis Boike on the subject of Megatrends in American Culture. There is no doubt our national culture is in flux. Some of the changes are wonderful, like technological connectedness. Some are not – the substitution of technological connection for human interaction might be considered one of those. He will not only discuss those trends, but examine how we can develop psychological hardiness and confront difficult issues in these changing times.

There will be an opportunity to ask questions, followed by lunch. After lunch, Craig Rand will talk about ways to “Create We." Hint: wear comfortable shoes and clothes.

After a break, we will have a panel discussion moderated by Heather Williams at 2:45 P.M. to examine “Who are We? at MCC.”  Since our focus is on the maintenance of a strong culture through communication and innovation, the panel features the following MCC experts:

·         Karen Coffey, a remarkable teacher of communications, including interpersonal interaction
·         Jethro Gaede, our resident cultural anthropologist who will examine “us” from an ethnological perspective
·         Jon Iuzzini, whose whole focus is on innovation in teaching and helping students learn in the classroom
·         James Murphy, a biologist who will talk about our culture as seen from a Departmental Chair’s vantage point.
·         Julie White from Student Services at the Damon campus who is uniquely qualified to look at our culture through yet another lens

We are going to ask the panel prepared questions, and if you have a particular question you would like asked, please email it to
cpowers@monroecc.edu  or hwilliams@monroecc.edu as soon as possible. We will do our best to make certain your questions get asked.

Finally, if you are not able to attend the whole day, we would encourage you to attend the portion that works for you. Our supportive culture is one of MCC’s greatest treasures.
