Collaborative and global learning are both designated as high-impact educational practices (HIPs) by the Association of American Colleges & Universities. MCC's participation in a SUNY-wide initiative to incorporate the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the curriculum offers a unique opportunity to incorporate both HIPs into your courses. For example, in the spring semester GEIS and the MCC Libraries worked together to offer students, as well as faculty and staff, an opportunity to transform 17 library study rooms into sources of information and inspiration about the SDGs for everyone at MCC. With few preset parameters, participants were invited to use their creativity to offer information and a call for action. Courses from multiple departments, a student club, and a faculty and staff committee signed on to participate before the move to distance learning interrupted the project. It will be relaunched next spring. This is just one example of how exploring the SDGs with students can provide opportunities to incorporate collaborative and global learning in both coursework and co-curricular activities. Join us as we use the project as a spark for a larger conversation about exploring the SDGs at MCC.
