MCC Proud: Alumna Kierstyn Martinez

To round out our Women’s History Month celebration, we introduce you to a prestigious MCC Alumna. Kierstyn Martinez earned her Associate’s in Engineering Science at MCC in 2015. She completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and Management at Clarkson University in 2017 and is currently a Software Consulting Manager in SAP Solutions for EY.

Veronica:  Why did you choose to attend MCC?

Kierstyn: MCC gave me to opportunity to save money on the first two years of my degree while giving me the opportunity to learn from an incredible group of professors in engineering. At the time, I didn’t realize the many doors it would open for me but I made the right choice.

Veronica: Why would you recommend MCC to other students?

Kierstyn: There is so much that MCC offers both in and out of the classroom to help you grow and learn as an individual. Many of the professional skills I gained at MCC put me leaps and bounds above my peers in my transfer school. MCC is a well-rounded education with the opportunity to make connections that will last a lifetime.

Veronica: Why do you think, as a woman in a male-dominated field, it is important to celebrate Women, especially during Women’s History Month?

Kierstyn: Many women in STEM, including myself, have found themselves in rooms where they are one of few, if not the only women there. Many of us have faced barriers and doubt from others, but we continue to persevere and make a path for future generations. That in itself should be celebrated, not only for our own successes but also for future generations to have a path to follow because we won’t give up.

Veronica: What woman in your life inspired you the most and why?

Kierstyn: I have met many inspiring professional women, my mother included, who have shown me you can have it all. You can be a strong woman moving up the ladder, breaking glass ceilings, and still be a mother or a partner if you choose to. The most inspiring thing for me has been to see women in higher positions that I hope to achieve one day. Knowing that it is possible and seeing someone similar to me do it is what has inspired me the most to keep pushing myself.

Veronica: What advice would you give other women when pursuing a career?

Kierstyn: My best advice when pursuing a professional career is don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself and set your boundaries. It’s ok to say no sometimes and log off for the day to live your life. We often feel we have to overwork ourselves to prove ourselves as women in STEM, but when I balance my work and personal life I have found much more success and happiness.

Veronica: What is your spirit animal and why?

Kierstyn: My spirit animal is a leopard; I resonate with its strength and adaptability. I forge my path through any terrain I find myself in and am successful. I always follow my instincts in life and use the resources I have to take each next step wisely.

Fun Fact: Kierstyn’s mom is Kim Dodson, Development Assistant for the Monroe Community College Foundation.
