Tech Tip: Getting a new phone for the Holidays?
When you get a new phone, you have to set up the Microsoft Authenticator again. Just logging into the authenticator on your phone will not work. Specific steps have to be taken to connect the new phone to the system correctly.
When you get your new phone, you have to add then Microsoft Authenticator back to your methods:
The Microsoft Authenticator app automatically is in "lock" mode. This means you will have to set up a lock screen on your phone if you do not already have one. The lock screen will be used to verify your identity when using the Authenticator app. The phone will ask you for a pin number or in some cases phones use biometrics like a fingerprint or face to unlock, like how you unlock your screen. You must know how to access your phone from a locked state or you will not be able to complete the setup process.
To set up the authenticator:
- Download the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device first.
- On Your Computer: go to myaccount.microsoft.com and login with your MCC credentials.
- Then, in the “Security” box click on Update info.
- There is a chart with your authentication methods. In the top left corner click Add sign-in method.
- Select Microsoft Authenticator from the list.
- Then, click on the Next button. On the next popup, click the Next button. You should see a QR code.
- On Your Mobile Device: Launch the Authenticator app. Be sure to allow Authenticator app access to your camera. Next, select Add work or school account. Next you should get an option to Scan QR code. Hold your phone in front of the computer screen like you are going to take a picture of the QR code. On your mobile device, tap Scan QR code and then scan the presented QR code on your PC screen. Tap Allow to allow push notifications.
- On Your Computer: Click Next on the webpage to continue.
- A multi-factor authentication push request will be sent to your mobile device to verify that everything is working as expected.
- Approve the notification on your mobile device, you will see a confirmation on your computer screen. Click Next to continue. You have now successfully added the Microsoft Authenticator app as an authentication method.
