MCC students defended their title at the 2024 University of Rochester pumpkin launching competition
MCC students, as part of the Engineering Leadership Council (ELC), took first place for distance in 2024 University of Rochester annual pumpkin chucking competition! The team also placed a close second in the accuracy competition. This is a second-year win for our students!
The ELC student team was led by student officers, Vice President Graham Wilczewski and President Hannah Reale. Their team competed against UR’s BAJA team, UR’s Solar Splash team, and RIT’s ASME chapter team. Students reworked their previous design of an oversized slingshot that launched pumpkins accurately anywhere from 100 to 350 feet. MCC students secured first place by using elastic bands, a hand winch a crane scale. This year, they also developed a computer program to calculate the required force depending on desired distance and mass of the pumpkin.
The ELC would like to acknowledge the support from the Student Government Association, Office of Student Life & Leadership, Campus Events, and Shipping and Receiving (for storing and returning the launcher). Special thanks this year to Jodi Oriel, Melissa Gue, Yolanda Johnson, Tom Polizzi.
