TCC: Fall Conversation #1--Asset-Based Pedagogy: An Introductory Conversation on Sept. 19
Please join the TCC on Monday, Sept. 19, 12:00-12:50 PM, as we begin our Conversations series this semester with Asset-Based Pedagogy: An Introductory Conversation. This event is Zoom-only, and will be facilitated by Bob Muhlnickel (English & Philosophy) and Betty Mandly (Education & Human Services). Maria Brandt (English & Philosophy) is a featured participant.
This conversation kicks off our theme for the coming year: Ditching Deficit-Based Pedagogy: Leveraging Student Assets. The conversation has three parts. First, a colleague will give a brief account of what it means to focus on student strengths rather than deficits and why we need to focus on student strengths. Second, three faculty members will describe efforts to introduce asset-based strategies into student engagement, learning, and assessment. Third, participants have the opportunity to reflect on their instructional practice and plan one small step toward asset-based pedagogy they can take this year.
Here are some resources on asset-based pedagogy and the psychology of attributing flaws to others’ character:
- SAGE Musings: Shifting from Deficit Thinking to Asset Thinking
- Fundamental Attribution Error
- Rejecting the Student Deficit Model
All from the MCC community are welcome! Zoom link is attached, as well as in the Events Calendar.
