Disability Awareness Month-October 2018
In 1988, the United States Congress declared October as National Disability Awareness Month, to raise awareness of the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities.
Federal civil rights laws that protect individuals with disabilities and ensure equal opportunity are the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendment Act (ADAAA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. These legal mandates protect individuals with disabilities to ensure equal access in higher education to admission, services, activities, facilities, and academic programs.
MCC's Counseling Center & Disability Services office is eager to celebrate and recognize the diversity of our student body. Throughout the month of October, the Counseling Center & Disability Services office plans to highlight various information related to disabilities, inclusivity, personal student experiences, and trainings.
According to the 2017 Disability Statistics Annual Report, the overall percentage of people with a disability of all ages in the US was 12.8%.
MCC is fortunate to have a rich and diverse population of students, faculty, and staff and we look forward to highlighting various information and events throughout the month.
Please see the attached document that outlines the upcoming workshops.
