The Annual New York State Fire Inspection begins on Monday, February 10th, 2025

The Annual New York State Fire Inspection will begin on Monday, February 10, 2025, and will run through Friday, February 14, 2025.

This inspection will cover the following locations:

  • Brighton Campus
  • Downtown Campus
  • Applied Technologies Center
  • Child Care Center
  • Residence Halls, and
  • Rush Range

Please ensure that your work areas meet our safety standards. Below is a list of common violations and suggestions for correcting them.

  • Extension Cords and Multi-Plug Adapters: During fire inspections, extension cords and multi-plug adapters are the most commonly prohibited items found. These items are not allowed on campus. Instead of using an extension cord or multi-plug adapter, please use a power strip. Additionally, connecting power strips together (daisy chaining) is not permitted. Each power strip must be plugged directly into an electrical outlet.
  • Fire Doors: Corridor doors, exit doors, and doors to unoccupied classrooms cannot be propped or wedged open.
  • Candles: Candles are not permitted on campus. Whenever a candle is lit, it is regarded as an open flame. Additionally, even unused candles can be cited by the State Inspector. However, battery-operated "candles" are allowed for decorative purposes.
  • Blocked Electrical Panels: Many offices and storage areas have electrical panels. It is crucial to keep these panels accessible, as they contain the circuit breakers that control the electricity used on campus. In the event of an electrical issue, having easy access to these panels is essential. If you find an electrical panel in your area that is blocked, please clear the space to ensure it remains accessible.
  • Ceiling Tiles: If you notice any missing or broken ceiling tiles, please contact Facilities or submit an online Maintenance Request Order to have the tiles replaced. The MRO can be accessed through the Facilities Department website.
  • Space Heaters: During the winter months, many employees use space heaters for warmth. Although they are permitted, they must adhere to the following requirements:
    • Placed at least 3 feet away from any combustibles.
    • Plugged directly into a wall outlet, not into a power strip.
    • Be UL listing with a sticker located on the back of the heater.
    • Have a tip-over safety switch that shuts off the heat if the unit is knocked over.
  • Combustible Storage: Items must be stored at least 18 inches below the level of a sprinkler head. In buildings without sprinklers, items should be stored at least 24 inches below the ceiling. Please check your storage areas and materials to ensure they do not obstruct the sprinkler system's ability to function properly.
  • Blocked Exits: Exits blocked by snow, ice, furniture, or equipment are prohibited. Inoperable doors, as well as those that are chained or bungee closed, are also not allowed. If you come across a door that is blocked, please reach out to the Facilities department for assistance.

We will do our best to minimize any disruptions during the inspections. Please review your workspaces and reach out to Ray Sabourin in the Environmental Health and Safety Office at (585) 292-3153 or via email if you have any questions about the inspection.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation during this inspection period.
