The Tutoring and Academic Assistance Center Course Shells for Faculty and Students

The Tutoring and Academic Assistance Center (TAAC) has course shells in Brightspace open to all Monroe Community College students and faculty!

How to find the TAAC on Brightspace:

In Brightspace, switch the All tab to Student Resources under My Courses.

This will bring you to view the TAAC Writing Hub, for help writing papers, the TAAC Academic Coaching Hub, for coaching resources, including study skills and strategies, and the TAAC Mathematics Hub, for math resources and course-specific tools.

Note: These courses were developed by Anne Devine, the Tutoring and Academic Assistance Center Lead Academic Coach, Jamey Keeton, the Tutoring and Academic Assistance Center Lead Writing Consultant, and Carlo Atene, the Tutoring and Academic Assistance Center Lead Mathematics Tutor.

What is an Academic Coach? An academic coach focuses on study skills and strategies that contribute to success in college, including but not limited to time management, study strategies, learning styles, and reading comprehension in any subject. In other words, an academic coach does not focus directly on content—an academic coach instead can help students to become better learners, improve study skills, and enhance planning, to complete assignments. In this way, coaches can help with any subject, since they do not focus on content, but on strategy.  Coaches will lead students to find study skills and learning strategies that can help them succeed in any course. Additionally, coaches are reading specialists and can help students to develop strategies and skills to better understand what they are reading across all subjects.

What is a Tutor? A tutor serves as a content expert and seeks to foster independent learning while providing content support for a targeted subject. Content tutors will aid with study strategies and learning skills but focus primarily on one or more particular learning objective in a single session to fill learning gaps. Tutors will lead students to find study skills and learning strategies that can help them succeed in a particular course.

What Is the Difference between a Tutor and an Academic Coach? View our "What is Academic Coaching Versus Tutoring? Video" for information.

What is a Writing Consultant? A writing consultant is a writing specialist who seeks to foster the development of independent writing and improve confidence.  Writing consultants are available to assist at any step of the writing process, from brainstorming to final revision and editing, and can help with papers, writing assignments, and presentations across all disciplines. They will help students to select from a wide range of stylistic choices, develop new writing skills, and empower their own unique voice as writers.
