Social, Cultural, and Economic Costs of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

On Monday, April 25th, sociology Professor Bethany Gizzi will present a noontime lecture on last year’s Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.  Last October,  Professor Dan Robertson presented a lecture in which he discussed the geological aspects of the oil spill; Professor Gizzi will expand on that previous lecture by examining the cultural and economic impacts of the disaster.  The lecture will address some of the changes that the oil spill wrought in Gulf Coast communities, such as the rise in poverty rates, and the strain on social services.  It will also examine some of the oil spill’s economic impacts, such as job loss and damage to local economies, as well as some effects that the spill has had on families, relationships, and individuals’ mental health.  The lecture will take place at 12 PM in the Forum, on the Brighton Campus.  Classes are welcome.
