Public Safety Giveaway Event: Steering Wheel Locks for Students

Nationwide and locally, a social media trend is resulting in an increase in motor vehicle thefts, especially of Kia and Hyundai vehicles. Some of these vehicles do not contain an internal immobilization device, resulting in criminals being able to steal the vehicle quickly without keys or key fobs by using a screwdriver and a USB cord. Immobilization devices, such as a steering wheel lock, may help deter the thefts.

MCC Public Safety and Parking Services have been able to obtain a supply of these steering wheel locks from Brighton PD and also from Hyundai Auto manufacturers.

We will provide these locks to students who drive Hyundai and Kia vehicles, as supplies last. Students should bring their vehicle registration to show to obtain the locks. There is no charge for these locks.

MCC Public Safety and Parking Services will be handing out the locking mechanisms on the following dates and times:

  • Monday March 13th  and Tuesday March 14th
    12:00pm to 1:00pm
    Brighton Campus Building 3 Terrace
Downtown Campus Second Floor Student Lounge

If you are unable to pick up the locking mechanisms on the above dates and times, contact Parking Services in person in Building 21-140, via phone (585-292-2700) or e-mail parkingrequests@monroecc.edu.

The MCC Public Safety office suggests that owners of Hyundai or Kia vehicles contact their respective dealerships for information on anti-theft software upgrades that may prevent these thefts.

As always, we ask the MCC community to be on the lookout for suspicious activity, and notify Public Safety immediately at 585-292-2911 (or X2911 on an internal phone) if you suspect anything out of the ordinary. Please feel free to also reach out with any questions or concerns, and thank you for playing your role in keeping our campus community safe.
