Nurses Week Alumna Faculty Profile: Margot Buschang

To celebrate Nurses Week, we are profiling some of the MCC nursing faculty who are also graduates! Today, we feature Margot Buschang.

Veronica: Why did you choose to become a nurse?
Margot: I chose to become a nurse because I have always been passionate about helping others and making a positive impact on their lives. Nursing allows me to combine my interest in science and medicine with my desire to provide compassionate care. The ability to support patients and their families during some of their most challenging times is incredibly rewarding and fulfilling.

Veronica: How did your education at MCC prepare you for your career?
Margot: My education at MCC provided me with a strong foundation in nursing. The coursework was rigorous, but combined with hands-on clinical experiences, equipped me with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in the field. The supportive faculty and collaborative learning environment at MCC also helped me develop critical thinking, communication, and leadership abilities that have been essential in my career.

Veronica: Why did you choose to come back and teach at MCC?
Margot: I chose to come back and teach at MCC because I wanted to give back to the institution that played such a significant role in shaping my career.  The faculty was so supportive when I went through the program, and I wanted to be that person for a future nursing student! Teaching allows me to share my knowledge and experiences with the next generation of nurses, and I find it incredibly rewarding to help students grow and succeed. MCC has a strong commitment to excellence in nursing education, and I am proud to be part of a team that is dedicated to preparing competent and compassionate healthcare professionals.

Veronica: What advice do you have for someone considering joining the nursing field?
Margot: For anyone considering joining the nursing field, my advice is to be prepared for a challenging yet incredibly rewarding journey. Nursing requires dedication, empathy, and a strong work ethic. It's important to stay curious, continuously seek learning opportunities, and never be afraid to ask questions. Building a strong support network of peers and mentors can also be invaluable. Most importantly, remember that nursing is not just a job—it's a calling to make a difference in the lives of others.

Veronica: If you could choose a spirit animal, what would it be and why?
Margot: If I could choose a spirit animal, it would be a dolphin. Dolphins are known for their intelligence, empathy, and a strong sense of community. They are also playful and adaptable, able to navigate through various challenges with grace. These qualities resonate with me as a nurse and educator, as I strive to be compassionate, resourceful, and supportive in my interactions with patients, students, and colleagues.
