President's Wednesday Message

This past Saturday morning, I attended the College’s Financial Aid Day at the Damon City Campus. The event brought in about 100 families seeking assistance in completing the FAFSA; they also toured DCC, talked to some of our students, had a chance to meet with community agencies, and could even pick up a bag of popcorn and visit the Airigami “Balloon Manor” installation. The entire effect was of a bright, energetic, welcoming campus, filled with faculty, staff, and peers dedicated to student success. In other words … it was MCC.

Then, I set off for the Brighton Campus to take in the Tribunes men’s and women’s basketball games — and sneak in a few hours work between them. Monagan Court was alive with the energy of our outstanding student-athletes and the Tribune M-Pire, our student cheering section. As the men struggled in their game, the M-Pire rose to their feet cheering, willing, and pulling them into an overtime win. The ability of our College to build teams and weave a message of the power of inspiration, both on and off the court, was on full display. In other words … it was MCC.

As I walked back and forth to my office that day, I took the long way. In the quiet of our Saturday hallways, I found students in every study corner, most often with headphones on and laptops open; students gathered around the whiteboards in Building 9 and around lab tables in an open biology lab; students flowing in and out of the library; students and faculty in classes distributed across campus like academic oases; students finally finding the time to pause in front of announcement boards full of flyers announcing campus activities; students in their organization offices, planning and working. In other words ... it was MCC.

We’re typically so close to what we’re doing at the time that it is difficult in the rush of daily work to take a step back and see our College in all of its facets; to see how and why MCC is more than busy every day … we’re inspiring. We are MCC.

What facet of MCC would you highlight? Share it in the comments on the
blog.
