Passing of Eugene Kraus, Math Department Retiree
The MCC family mourns the passing of Eugene (Gene) Kraus, MCC Math Department retiree, on January 11, 2024, at the age of 86.
Gene earned an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Princeton University, a master’s degree from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. from the University of Tampere in Finland. He joined MCC in 1993 as an assistant professor in the mathematics department and received tenure in 1998. During his career at MCC, Gene served on several committees, published papers on applied mathematics, and was a member of both MAA (Mathematical Association of America) and the Teacher Preparation Advisory Council, which led to the establishment of the Teacher Education Department. Gene retired from MCC in 2008.
Predeceased by his sister, Anne Kraus, Gene is survived by his beloved wife, Sherry Kraus, and by his older brother, David Kraus, his brother-in-law, Robert Stokes, and his nephew, Robert Curtis Stokes.
