Single-Stream Recycling

What is Single-Stream Recycling?

Single-stream recycling is a system in which all recyclables, including newspaper, cardboard, plastic, aluminum, junk mail, etc., are placed in a single bin or cart for recycling. These recyclables are collected by a single truck and taken to a Materials Recovery Facility to be sorted and sent to facilities to reuse in manufacturing.

Similar to our personal home recycling blue bins, all recycling is placed in one bin.  Just like the saying goes, one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch, the same holds true in recycling.  When trash enters the blue recycling bin, such as food waste, Styrofoam, etc., the whole bin must be collected as trash and will end up in a landfill.

Monroe Community College has no costs associated with recycling removal which is a great incentive to work towards appropriately recycling.  When the lot is contaminated, the recycling is trashed and MCC is billed by weight.  Not only do we help the environment by appropriately recycling at MCC, we also save money!

We would like to Thank you in advance for your commitment and support to help us with our strategic direction of institutional effectiveness, efficiency, and sustainability.

Please visit our website for additional details on what is and isn’t recyclable.

If you have any recycling questions or need assistance in disposing of items, please call Custodial Operations at 292-2593 or email us at facilities@monroecc.edu.

Thank you,

Courtney Sprague
