Dressing Fresh with MCC Upward Bound

Do you ever wonder where your sense of style got its roots? Here at MCC Upward Bound we wanted to know where all these fashion trends came from. To answer this question we took our students to see the documentary “Fresh Dressed.”

“Fresh Dressed” follows the history of “urban” and hip-hop fashion in New York City from the 1960s to now. The film took an in-depth look at popular fashion brands such as Cross Colors, Karl Kani, Sean John, Phat Farm, and many more.

We heard how neighborhoods in the Bronx transformed “posh” clothing meant for upper-class citizens into fresh street wear. The film also covered the rise of the high-end sneaker trend. According to the film, urban fashion is becoming much more individualized due to the rise of technology. It allows young people to express themselves through their clothes, especially if they don’t have access to other means of self-expression.

Northeast sophomore Isabel said she enjoyed seeing the film, since her dad grew up in the Bronx and had exposed her to all these trends before.
