MCC Teams Place 2nd and 3rd at Engineering Design Competition

Student teams from Monroe Community College placed second and third at the 2006 American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Two-Year College Division Engineering Design Competition in Chicago, Illinois. on June 19.

The competition required teams to design and build an autonomous robot capable of delivering ping pong balls to each of four corner pockets located on an 8’ X 8’ plywood track. Each team had to create a written report, make an oral presentation, and then perform four trials on the track.

The Helicon team, led by team captain Brian Mott (Rochester), and including Matt Missell (Irondequoit) and Fred Totten (Gates) earned second place, earning 505 points out of a possible 543. Team Innovate, including team captain Jason Martin (Mendon), Steve Fleming (Avon) and Bill Spath (Irondequoit) took third with 497 points. Both teams won first and third place respectively at the State University of New York design competition in April in Watertown, N.Y. leading up to the national competition. Two other MCC student teams placed within the top eight respectively at nationals.

Professor John Wadach partnered with faculty member at the college’s Precision Tooling and Machining program to prepare the students for competition. Last year, the team from MCC won the national championship.
