Unlocking Opportunity Implementation Team Update

One of the goals of the Unlocking Opportunity: The Post-Graduation Success and Equity Network Implementation Team is to keep the MCC community informed of our activities and progress. As a result, we will provide periodic updates regarding our three priority areas: redesigning our advising model, enhancing Gateway English and Math outcomes, and improving post-graduation success through program mapping. We’re thrilled to share that thanks to your hard work and dedication, MCC is making significant strides in all three areas.

Advising Reimagined

On Tuesday, March 4, 2025, students met with more than 30 colleges and universities during the Spring Transfer College Fair. This was the first in-person transfer fair in six years. Moreover, Student Success Coaches continue to educate the College community on the new advising model, and efforts are underway to align the School of Applied Sciences & Technology within the advising framework.

MCC is collaborating with SUNY Brockport to host a transfer professionals' workshop in March to increase knowledge of transfer advising between our institutions in support of student post-completion success. What’s more, seventeen Student Success and Advising Services team members are registered for the SUNY CPD Coaching Strategies in Higher Education course.

Gateway English and Math

Faculty and student engagement with the Tutoring and Academic Assistance Center (TAAC) continues to increase. More than 300 additional students sought math support in Fall 2024 compared to the Fall 2023 semester, and the number of math-related visits to the center increased by more than 1,100 during the same timeframe. Similarly, 364 more students sought English support in Fall 2024 than they did the previous fall, which constitutes an increase of 948 visits.

The newly-developed co-requisite course for College Algebra (MTH-165) recently received final approval in our curriculum process, and two sections are slated to run in the Fall 2025 semester. This course can serve as an Intermediate Algebra "refresher" for those voluntarily seeking additional support while they take College Algebra or as a path forward for students who earned a C- in Intermediate Algebra.

While Math completes development of the department’s Summer Professional Learning Institute, English faculty continue their communities of practice focused on access-oriented and equity-minded course design and delivery methods.

The Developmental Education Committee, led by former TRS math and English faculty members, began meeting in February 2025. The co-chairs met with the Deans of STEM & Health and Liberal Arts & Business to discuss progress and action items for Spring 2025.

Goals and action items for the 2025-26 academic year will be due at the end of April.

Program Mapping

The Program Review Redesign Committee is finalizing its proposal for submission to the Provost by mid-semester.

Our transfer-focused partnership with Nazareth University continues; deans from both institutions have met to begin the work of program mapping.

College Now/Dual Enrollment operations are streamlining their offerings to expand and provide intentional pathways that align with MCC's programs. The College Now/Dual Enrollment's K-12 coordinator position has been posted.

Anticipated Next Steps of the UO Implementation Team

  • Advising Reimagined: A workgroup is creating a comprehensive gap assessment to discover areas where streamlined technologies can support primary and secondary advisor assignments. The Enrollment Management, Student Success, and Strategic Initiatives areas are working on an intent-to-enroll process. To capture the students' voices, we will utilize EDSIGHTS, conduct student focus groups, and collect information from the marketing brand-perception student study.
  • English: English-Philosophy is working with IR to develop an institutional research report showing changes in success rates for students in gateway English between Fall 2023 and Fall 2024. A pilot one-credit lab for English 101 students will commence in Fall 2025.
  • Math: The department is working to deliver an update on the status/efficacy of co-requisite math courses and guided self-placement. The design has been created, and a tech request has been submitted to program the guided self-placement.
  • Program Mapping: The Program Review Redesign Committee's mid-semester report will provide key recommendations for improving program mapping. MCC is working to map programs with select four-year partner schools. This work will involve a deep review of our curriculum to ensure our students can move seamlessly from MCC to the school of their choice. These insights will help refine MCC's approach to aligning academic programs with student needs and institutional goals. Additionally, the new website will enhance the accessibility of program information, allowing students to make more informed decisions.

Again, on behalf of the entire Unlocking Opportunity Implementation Team, we thank everyone for their hard work and collaboration. This is an exciting time to be at MCC!
