New Downtown Campus: Revisiting Design

In collaboration with Damon City Campus faculty and staff leaders, the New Downtown Campus Project Team has refined the number of academic and student services offices needed at the new downtown campus. Design is moving forward to accommodate 105-115 walled offices of sizes similar to what’s found on the Brighton Campus.

To include these walled offices, previously presented design plans are being modified. We are suggesting to our design firm, LaBella Associates, that two conference rooms, a video production lab, work room, faculty lounge and physical education activity center be eliminated from the earlier draft plan in order to free 3,700 sq. ft., about the amount of space needed for walled offices. It is important to note that the design plan still includes two exercise/phys ed rooms, a dividable conference room, and 52 classrooms. When not in use for instruction, classrooms will have the flexibility to be used for meetings.

Of course, it is not a simple matter of putting offices in place of these spaces; our design team will need to shift space to create reasonable proximities of functions. We anticipate that new designs will be ready for presentation by the end of 2014. Good progress over these next weeks and months is critical to achieving our Fall 2017 opening. We encourage you to stay apprised of the project’s progress via the MCC Daily Tribune.

My thanks go to the DCC academic leadership and the Downtown Campus Project Team for its work in identifying these modifications.
