ITC Audioconference - The Cheatability Factor

MCC will host the Instructional Technology Council’s professional development audioconference entitled “The Cheatability Factor” on Tuesday, April 7 from 2:00-3:00PM in the Flynn Campus Center, room 3-115. The presenters are John Krutsch, Sr. Director for Instructional Design, Development and Delivery; Jared Stein, Director of Instructional Design Services; and Marc Hugentobler, Director of Faculty Training and Development Services, Utah Valley University.

Seventy-five percent of students have admitted to cheating during their college career. The presenters will discuss research that examines cheating in higher education and in distance learning. A number of factors are particularly salient in online courses, such as how one defines cheating, actual or perceptual "distance," level of instructor-student interaction, and the relevance and/or meaningfulness of activities and assessments. Technical considerations can increase or decrease a student's propensity and ability to cheat. The presenters have created a rubric to assess whether an online course is more or less open to cheating -- from the course design to delivery. This rubric is available to teachers who are developing a course or teaching at a distance, administrators and department chairs who want to preserve the integrity of online education, and to other course designers to better evaluate and recommend online assessments before, during and after an online course is taught.
