Jannette Avery to Serve as Faculty Marshal at 2025 MCC Commencement

Monroe Community College is proud to announce that Professor Jannette (Jann) Avery will serve as the Faculty Marshal for the 2025 Commencement ceremony. In her role as Faculty Marshal, Professor Avery, who has dedicated her career to the Mathematics Department at MCC, will represent faculty as the macebearer and lead the faculty processional.

A graduate of SUNY Brockport with an M.S. in Mathematics, Professor Avery has had a distinguished career at MCC. She has made significant contributions to the Mathematics Department and the broader College community through her deep commitment to educational excellence and innovation. Throughout her tenure, Jann has been a tireless advocate for students and faculty, always looking for ways to enhance the learning experience through the integration of technology and progressive teaching practices.

A true leader in the field of education, Jann’s work has had a lasting impact on both the academic community at MCC and the wider educational landscape. Her work with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, particularly with distance education, helped to shape the future of remote learning at MCC. Additionally, her leadership with Blackboard, Virtual Campus, and the SUNY Technology Advisory Committee has been instrumental in enhancing the College’s remote learning capabilities, ensuring that students and faculty have had the tools they needed to succeed in an evolving educational environment.

Jann also demonstrated extraordinary leadership when she served as Department Chair during the COVID-19 pandemic. The sudden transition to remote learning presented numerous challenges, but Jann’s calm and decisive leadership ensured that the Mathematics Department continued to support students and faculty during those uncertain and stressful times. Her ability to adapt and guide her colleagues through this transition was invaluable.

In addition to her leadership in the Mathematics Department, Jann has been an influential figure at MCC’s Downtown (formerly Damon City) Campus . She served as Chair of the Liberal Arts at Damon City Campus Faculty Group, where she provided vital support to both faculty and students, ensuring that the educational needs of the Downtown community were met.

Jann’s commitment to shared governance at MCC is evident through her many years of service on the Faculty Senate. Notably, she was a key member of the Curriculum Committee and the Provisional Placement Committee during the COVID-19 era. Her contributions to these committees helped guide the College through one of the most challenging times in higher education history.

Jann has served on the Grievance Hearing Committee for many years, demonstrating her dedication to fairness and the well-being of the MCC community. Her efforts on these important committees have made a lasting impact on College governance and policies.

Prior to her leadership roles, she taught a variety of mathematics courses at MCC. She was also deeply involved in curriculum development, expanding the College’s online and hybrid course offerings to make education more accessible to all students. Jann's contributions to these initiatives reflect her unwavering commitment to improving the learning experience for MCC students.

Jann’s legacy at MCC is one of excellence, leadership, and an unyielding dedication to student success. She has been a mentor, a collaborator, and a champion for faculty and students alike. As Faculty Marshal at the 2025 Commencement, Jann will take her rightful place as a representative of the values and spirit that make MCC such a special institution.

Please join us in congratulating Jann Avery for her outstanding service to MCC and her enduring commitment to educational excellence. We are proud to honor her as she leads the faculty processional at this year’s Commencement.
