Yesterday’s attendance memo had a typo. I repeatedly stated the census date was 9/30/11, when in reality, the census date for full term courses is 9/26/11. Every single member of the math department and Institutional Research has called or e-mailed me to request clarification. Those “kinds of people” are so picky about numbers.
I had a long conversation with my 13 year old son over the weekend when he was complaining about his math teacher taking points off on his homework because he wrote the number 4 as his answer to a problem. Apparently, the correct answer was NEGATIVE 4. (You know the excuses: he meant to add the negative sign, she knew what he meant, she should have been more understanding, of course he knew it was a negative number, she was just picking on him….) I assured my son that the teacher was correct in taking the points off because there is a big difference between 4 and -4.
And I also understand that there is a big difference between 9/26 and 9/30.
My apologies. The census date for full term courses is 9/26/11.
