Men & Women Swimming & Diving reel in Team Championship amongst other Awards at Region III Championships

The Monroe Community College Swimming & Diving Teams continued its tradition of winning and excelling in the water and on the boards this past weekend for the Regional III Swimming and Diving Championships. Both Men and Women were presented the Dan Dubois Seasonal Championship Award upon completing the Regional III Meet. The meet was a grueling 3-day, four sessions Timed Finals. The Coaching Staff of Dale Pearce, John Rodman, and Evan Harrison were named Men’s Coaching Staff of the Year for Region III with the Erie Men’s Staff.   

The Tribune Men successfully defended their Region III Team Championship Title (Most Points at Meet). They were led by sophomores Mike Laviani, Alex Scaglione, and Brendan Briggs and stellar Diving core performances. Mike Laviani led the way by winning four individual events and successfully defending Region III Titles in the 500, 1,000, 1,650 Freestyle, and 200 Backstroke. Freshman Ryan Campbell dominated the entire diving competition by winning both 1M and 3M boards. He was joined by Jon Smith in both events, and Brycen Lynch added a solid performance in 1M diving too. The diving performances were a critical piece for the Tribunes to pull ahead in total points on Session 2 and not look back from that point. Solid performances were had by freshmen Quin Blair and Evan Olsheski in IM and Breaststroke Events.

Men Individual and Relay Winners

  • Mike Laviani: 500, 1000, 1,650, and 200 Backstroke
  • Brendan Briggs: 200 Freestyle
  • Alex Scaglione: 50 and 100 Yard Freestyle

400 Yard Medley (Laviani, Olsheski, Scaglione, Briggs)

400 Free Relay (Laviani, Olsheski, Scaglione, Briggs)

800 Free Relay (Blair, Laviani, Scaglione, Briggs)

The Tribune Women also performed exceptionally well and was led by the sophomore leadership of Emma Preski, Sage Garcia, Kara Williamson, and McKenna Briggs. They placed third overall with gritty performances across the entire meet. Williamson and Briggs led the way by winning two individual events, and diver Jill Sauer locked in a Regional Title in 1M Diving. Preski had in-season best times in all distance free events, while Sage Garcia added support in Freestyle and Butterfly events. Freshman Autumn Collins and Yasmin Garcia were critical to relay support, backstroke, and freestyle events, and both posted lifetime bests during the meet. Sophomore Kelsey Hucks added support in sprint stroke and IM events.

  • Kara Williamson: 50 free, 100 IM
  • McKenna Briggs: 200 free, 100 free

Please help us congratulate our Student-Athletes on their amazing accomplishments this past weekend. Both Teams head off to Buffalo in 2 weeks for the 2023 NJCAA Swimming & Diving Championships hosted by Erie Community College on March 1st through 4th.
