Chemistry Faculty and Chemistry Club participate in Brighton Festival of Ideas

Several chemistry faculty and chemistry club members participated in the Brighton Festival of Ideas this past Saturday at Brighton High School. The group presented three workshops titled "The Sweet Side of Chemistry" to middle school students. Volunteers guided students through a series of experiments related to the chemistry of candy. Experiments explored the acidity of sour candies, floating m's of M&M's, inflating balloons with pop rocks, and preparing gummy worms with sodium alginate.

Our participation in this yearly event would not be possible without the help of some wonderful volunteers. In attendance were faculty members Jason Anderson, Ryan Clemens, Brian Edelbach, Judy Mevs, and Azwana Sadique, and MCC students, Chiara Giraldo and Michelle Kimball.

The organizers of the festival are actively looking for more programs for next year. If anyone is interested in learning more about the festival of ideas and how they may get involved with next year’s program please feel free to email Ryan Clemens (rclemens@monroecc.edu).
