MCC will host the Instructional Technology Council’s professional development audioconference entitled “Risk Factors for Student Persistence in Online Education” on Tuesday, April 20, from 2:00PM-3:00PM in room 3-115. Please note that one of the presenters is none other than our own Peggy VanKirk! The other presenters are Robert G. Knipe, Genesee Community College; Martha Dixon, Erie Community College; Susan Gallagher, Hudson Valley Community College; and, Christie F. Mitchell, Dutchess Community College.
As distance learning programs mature and support services become increasingly virtual, and online enrollment exceeds 10-15% of FTE at some institutions, student persistence (on-time successful course completion) and retention (program and degree completion) become as important as growth was a few years ago. SUNY directors of online/distance learning (DOODLE) have shared persistence data for several years, and identified student risk factors. Several SUNY colleges have implemented various course-level (instructional design, faculty training) and system-level (advising, business processes, MIS/CMS interface, etc.) tools which have been demonstrated to improve student success. This panel will overview risk factors, strategies, tools and best practices for improving student persistence (successful on-time course completion in online courses), at both course and institutional levels.
