Student Veteran Profile: Xiomara Guerrero

  • Branch: U.S. Army Reserves (2014 to 2023)
  • Active Duty: Tour in Afghanistan from 2020 to 2021
  • Stationed: Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, NY, and PA.

Why did you join the military?

I joined the military due to the patriotism instilled in me by my father, who swam to this country way before I was born in hopes of a better life for his children. I can only hope I've made him proud with my actions. He's since been laid to rest in 2019. I'm a first-generation American from his side and a first-generation college graduate from both my immediate father's and mother's sides of the family.

What does Veterans Day mean to you?

To me, Veterans Day is a time to celebrate not just the honor that comes with the title of Veteran but, most importantly, the grit it took to persevere through challenges and distractions to achieve that honor.

What are your future plans?

My future plans are to complete my second Associate's degree from MCC and hopefully get accepted into St. John Fisher University, where I'm a shift supervisor as a Safety and Security Officer. I will then achieve my Bachelor's in Biochemistry and finally go for my Doctorate in Pharmacy.
