Geography Student Wins First Place in Map Competition!

MCC student, and Geospatial Information Science & Technology major, Gwen Wheatley, won first place in the student map competition at the annual Geographic Information Sharing/Special Interest Group (GIS/SIG) Conference in Rochester on April 16th.  The conference brings together geospatial professionals, educators, and college students from the greater Genesee and Finger Lakes region for the purpose of GIS education, data sharing, communication and networking with other local, state, and national users, dissemination of information about trends and policies related to GIS, and technology advancement.

Gwen’s winning map, depicting points of interest in the Adirondack State Park, was created as part of her final project for Cartography (GEG 131) last fall.  The map’s theme was inspired by vintage tourist maps and by Gwen’s desire to make planning her trips to the Adirondack Mountains more efficient.

Stop by the third floor of Building 11 to see this award-winning map on display in the Geosciences hallway!
