MCC Faculty Present at National Humanities Conference

Last week, multiple members of the MCC faculty presented their work at the 2023 Community College Humanities Association (CCHA) Conference in Austin, Texas.

Professor Njeru Murage (Anthro-Hist-Poli Sci-Soc) presented “Teaching History to a Non-Interested Audience,” which explored methods for inciting student engagement and interest in the history classroom by demonstrating that “the past is active in their daily lives.”

Professors Joseph Scanlon (Anthro-Hist-Poli Sci-Soc) and Robert Muhlnickel (English-Philosophy), in partnership with colleagues from Kirkwood Community College, facilitated “Practicing Democracy in the Classroom and Community: Using Deliberative Dialogues to Improve Student Success and Civic Life.” This pre-conference workshop helped participates understand deliberative dialogues “as an innovative and high-impact practice that bolsters student success in and out of the classroom.”

Dean Michael Jacobs (Humanities & Social Sciences) co-led the Deans’ Committee’s session, “Challenges and Opportunities in Community College Leadership.” Dean Jacobs also serves as CCHA’s Deputy Director of Conferences & Special Projects.
