Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month- MCC Employee Spotlight Series

Each year Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American Citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988.

Today, over 61.2 million Hispanics make up the second largest racial or ethnic group in the U.S., accounting for roughly 19% of the nation's total population. To honor and pay tribute to all of the contributions Hispanic-Americans have given to the United States — and the world — we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

Hispanic Heritage Month is about highlighting the rich culture and contributions of Hispanic ancestry. For the next three weeks we will be featuring a member of our Latino MCC family in hopes that it inspires employees and students.

The purpose of LEN (Latino Empowerment Network) is to establish, maintain, and promote a network for the empowerment, development, and advancement of Latinos at Monroe Community College. It is the duty and responsibility of LEN to foster intercultural dialogue and understanding, promote the positive image of a diverse Latino community so faculty/staff and students further appreciate and respect the richness of Monroe Community College. We will serve the community through cultural activities, educational initiatives, and partnerships.
